Asana Plugin for Spira Now Available

22-Apr-2020 by Inflectra Product News

During our InflectraCon conference last year, one of the key themes was Harmony, and how Inflectra's software and products can foster harmony in the product development lifecycle. One of the key ways we are able to do this is with our rich library of extensions and connectors for our products, available at no additional cost to our customers. We are pleased to announce that we have just released a new plugin for the popular Asana task tracking system.

What is Asana?

Asana is a web and mobile application designed to help teams organize, track, and manage their work. Forrester, Inc. reports that “Asana simplifies team-based work management". Asana is a lightweight easy to use task management system that lets you organized tasks into workspaces, organizations and projects:

Many of our customers are using SpiraTeam and SpiraPlan in heterogeneous environments, with different teams using different tools to manage team-level development activities. For example, teams may be using Jira, GitLab and Azure DevOps in the same company. Several customers reached out to us looking for us to add a similar connector for Asana so that managers could create and assign the tasks in SpiraTeam, but allow the teams to track and complete their tasks in Asana.

We are seeing a move away from some of the more heavyweight, complex tools such as Jira, Rational products and Micro Focus ALM to newer tools such as SpiraTeam and GitLab. The new plugin for Asana is the next step in that trend.

How Does the Plugin Work?

Our new plugin for Asana is available for both cloud and on-premise customers of SpiraTeam. For on-premise customers you need to download the plugin into your environment:

For cloud customers it is available already on our cloud synchronization platform.

Once enabled, you can log new incidents and tasks directly in SpiraTeam as normal:

The new incidents and tasks will then be synchronized over to Asana as a new task:

When users make any of the following changes in Asana, they will synchronize back into Spira:

  • Assign the task to someone
  • Mark the task as completed
  • Add a comment to the task
  • Make changes to its name or description

In addition, the Spira task will automatically include a hyperlink to the corresponding item in Asana:
