Bring real-world software testing into the classroom.

The university’s Department of Information Technology adopted SpiraTeam in 2021/22 for students, many of whom came from non-professional testing backgrounds. The goal was to provide a structured, industry-relevant environment for practical learning.

  1. 1
    Build practical skills.
Give students hands-on experience with project management and testing activities.
  2. 2
    Support varied experience levels.
Make a broad set of testing capabilities approachable for first-time users.
  3. 3
    Connect coursework to industry practice.
Use workflows that resemble real-world test and quality-management activities.

A practical platform students could learn quickly.

SpiraTeam became the first test management platform many students had used. Its accessible interface helped them work across a broad range of functions, from test case management to incident tracking.

One integrated platform, clearer testing work.

The case study highlights four areas where students benefited while navigating realistic testing tasks and organizing complex projects.

Ease of Use and Accessibility

Students with limited testing backgrounds adapted quickly to the interface, even while using features ranging from test case management to incident tracking.

Project and Test Case Management

Folder grouping and test case linking helped students structure growing sets of test cases, maintain clarity, and reduce redundant work.

User-Friendly Incident Management

Students could log issues with severity, priority, and screenshots, making it easier to document and track defects precisely.

Clear Visualization of Test Progress

Visual execution status, test runs, and incident information gave students immediate insight into project progress and helped them analyze and present outcomes.

What students said about SpiraTeam.

SpiraTeam is overall easy to use – the UI is intuitive even for people with very little experience in the field like myself.
Kateřina Hrudková, Student
The strength of SpiraTeam makes organizing your project easy. You can organize your test cases into specific folders, give them type and status, which helps to keep a structured overview.

SpiraTeam remains part of upcoming courses.

Following positive student feedback, Prague University of Economics and Business planned to continue using SpiraTeam in upcoming courses. The case study says the tool would be central to the “Software Testing and Quality” course in the fall semester, along with an additional course covering foundational software testing principles scheduled for 2025.
