Associating a test set with a release, by going to the Test Set and then choosing the Scheduled Release field dos not add the the test cases to a release until the test set is run.
Is it possible to have the test cases in a test set added to a release before the test set is run without having to add them one by one?
A quick tip - if you assigned a scheduled Release to the test set, then execute the test set, the test cases in the set get added automatically to the release.

But I want the test cases from the test set added to the release before executing the test set so that it is possible to track the the progress. I guess that is not possible?
You can add of the test cases in a release to a new test set this way:
