My client has a relatively large number of custom fields on their requirements, and would like to be able to add notifications that are currently not possible.
One of the fields is "Business Analyst" ("BA"), with type "user". Whenever that field is updated, they need the BA whose name is in the field to be notified. This would need two changes that I can see:

Great suggestion, Colin! Allowing notifications for changes in custom fields and enabling recipients based on field content would definitely enhance flexibility and usability. Hope this gets implemented soon to address your client’s needs!
Another idea: Not to get notifications raised by changes done by yourself.

You’re right—most systems only trigger notifications on standard fields and fixed recipients. To notify based on a custom user field like “Business Analyst,” you’ll likely need a custom solution or plugin that listens for changes to that field and sends alerts accordingly.If your platform supports webhooks or API events for custom fields, that could be a good starting point.
Is there a case where an error occurs during activation where the new user does not receive a notification?

Simply activate the user account.
