Clarification on "Modify All" vs. "Modify Owned" in Product Role

Hi,

I’d like to clarify how the permissions work in SpiraPlan. If the "Modify All" option is enabled in the Product Roles settings, but "Modify Owned" is disabled, does "Modify All" override the limitations of "Modify Owned"?

In our current setup, "Modify All" is checked, while "Modify Owned" is not — I’d like to confirm if this grants the user full editing access to all artifacts in the product.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Actually yes, Modify All permission is higher priority than Modify Owned permission.

With "Modify All" is checked, while "Modify Owned" is not — this grants the user full editing access to all artifacts in the product.

Here you can read more about artifact's specific permissions: https://spiradoc.inflectra.com/Spira-Administration-Guide/System-Users/#artifact-specific-permissions

Hello Victoria,

Thanks for confirming this. It’s helpful to know that Modify All takes precedence over Modify Owned and effectively grants full editing rights across all artifacts.

Just to clarify — if both permissions are enabled, I assume Modify All still governs access in all cases?

Hello,

When both permissions enabled then "Modify All" covers all the modification, including "Modify Owned" so yes.

The functional difference is that when you need to restrict modification, but still allow to modify owned items.
