Twenty years. In the tech world, that’s practically an eternity. When Inflectra opened its doors twenty years ago, tech meant dial-up internet, physical data storage on CDs, and printed maps, with AI virtually non-existent.
As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we’ve been doing a lot of reflecting. We’ve pushed out hundreds of releases, built thousands of features, and watched the landscape of software development shift beneath our feet.
Tech never stops evolving, and we’ve been lucky enough to walk that journey alongside our incredible community. To mark this milestone, we sat down with the team to compile the 20 biggest lessons we’ve learned in 20 years.
Catering to the Customer’s Choice
If there’s one thing two decades have taught us, it’s that there is no "one size fits all" in software. Success lies in giving customers the power to choose what works for them, not forcing them into a box. Over the years, we’ve learned to embrace the spectrum:
-
Waterfall or Agile: Methodologies come and go in waves, but supporting a team's current reality matters more than tech dogma.
-
On-Premise or SaaS: Security boundaries change, but flexibility shouldn't.
-
Just Testing or All-in-One SDLC: Whether a team needs a point solution or a complete lifecycle engine, we cater to the scope they need.
-
Consistent Standardization or Complex Customization: Balancing out-of-the-box predictability with deep, tailored configurations is an art form.
-
Rip-and-Replace vs. Seamless Integration: You don't always need to tear down the old to build the new; integrating with existing SDLC tools is often the smartest path forward.
-
Code or Code-Free: Empowering both hardcore developers and business testers keeps the whole team moving faster.
-
AI Everywhere vs. No AI: From unlimited tokens to completely AI-free environments, choice matters, especially when data privacy is on the line.
-
Short-Term or Long-Term Licensing: Flexibility in procurement builds trust.
-
Scaling Up or Scaling Down: Teams grow and contract; licensing should mirror that reality seamlessly.
-
Engaging Directly or Via Partners: Meeting customers exactly where and how they want to do business is the ultimate unlock.
The Evolution of the Craft
- Quality Engineering is Ready for the AGI Era: Testing and QA were once treated as reactive afterthoughts, serving as the final gate before release. Today, it is integrated, proactive, and continuous Quality Engineering.
- Testing is Not Dead: Every five years, someone boldly declares that testing is dead. Spoiler alert: it’s not. Testing has outlived at least four of those predictions and is feeling great.
- Software Touches Everything Now: Twenty years in, the stakes are higher than ever. Software powers healthcare, finance, public safety, and democracy. The people testing it are doing some of the most critical work in technology, and we are fiercely proud to be in their corner.
- Quality Can’t Be Bolted On: You cannot ignore quality during development and hope to patch it up at the finish line. This is a lesson that keeps arriving at companies' doors uninvited, like a very persistent salesperson.
- Tools Aren't the Hard Part: You can buy the shiny new tool, but getting teams to change how they actually work is the real challenge. It always has been.
The Power of People & Culture
At the end of the day, it’s the people behind the screens who truly make the difference.
- Leave Egos at the Door: As our own Simon puts it, after hundreds of releases, what sticks with him most is the team. Stepping up to help each other and our customers with zero ego is the secret sauce to longevity.
- Celebrate the Small Wins: A 20-year legacy isn't built overnight. It’s made of thousands of small, routine victories that felt ordinary at the time but paved the way for where we are today.
- True Product Experts Make the Best Support: As Teresa highlights, having genuine product specialists answer support tickets sets us apart. Our support team handles an incredible mix of product and support duties, and they are the unsung heroes of our retention.
- Listening is the Most Underrated Feature: Some of our absolute best product improvements didn’t come from a boardroom. Instead, they came directly from customers who were frustrated enough to tell us exactly what they needed. A down-to-earth, approachable tone from the top down ensures people feel comfortable giving us that honest feedback.
- Cultivate Advocates Early: Your most loyal customers will become your greatest advocates, but only if you treat them like royalty before they’re famous for it. Deep, collaborative relationships grow over many years when driven by a simple, honest goal: build great software that teams love to use because it genuinely helps them.
